Slatington tables ordinance on cameras at meetings

The Slatington Human/Community Services Committee tabled a safety ordinance issue at Monday's meeting until a final draft has been prepared.

The tabled ordinance regards cameras in council chambers, specifically tripods.Committee Chairman David Schnaars said the ordinance is a matter of where the tripods are set up in the room."If there's need for a quick egress, then no one will trip over equipment."Borough resident Kris Burek drew issue with part of the two different proposed drafts she received from Morning Call columnist Bill White. According to Burek, White received the draft copies of the future ordinance from borough solicitor Ed Healy."It says there will be confiscation of equipment if it's not in compliance with policy. You need to be careful. Only people who are allowed to confiscate are police with probable cause of a proof of crime. Otherwise you can be sued.""We will let our lawyer worry about that," Schnaars said."Your lawyer doesn't have a good hit record lately," Burek replied."We used to have just one camera; now there are two. We are worried about safety.""Well what about someone who has their legs stretched out in the aisle," she said. "I really think this is going a little too far."The policy had been tabled during a previous council meeting to give the committee time to iron out the two drafts' details for the proposed ordinance.
