N'western clinches playoff berth
When Harry Hall is held to under 100 yards rushing, you would figure that the Northwestern Lehigh football team would find itself in trouble.
Hall rushed for 93 yard on 14 carries, but still scored three touchdowns as the Tigers defeated Northern Lehigh 31-6 to maintain control of the "Bo and Brett's Mountain Road Rumble" Trophy. The Bulldogs actually trailed by one score as the second half started, but a blocked punt on their first offensive possession gave the Tigers the ball on the Northern Lehigh 15 and five plays later, Dylan Snyder found the end zone on a keeper making it 21-6 giving the Tigers the momentum for the rest of the night."We had to be really patient," said Hall afterwards. "We made some dumb mistakes that shouldn't have been made. We were just able to come up with a couple of big plays and do well on those."It was the second year in a row the Bulldogs held Hall under 100 yards. Last year he had 61."We knew it was going to be a tough game," said Northwestern head coach Josh Snyder. "They have a well-coached team. The case kid is an absolute monster in there so it was tough sledding inside. Their ends were spilling everything so tackle to tackle it was tough."Tyler Foster gave the Tigers a big boost right off the bat when he returned the opening kickoff down to the Northern Lehigh eight."Foster's return really lifted our spirits," said Snyder. "We went up seven."We knew they were going to grind it on us and do what Northern Lehigh does. Our game plan was make them drive it the length of the field. Hopefully, they'll make a mistake, but don't let them pop any big ones on us. We were able to do that most of the night."Hall scored his second TD with 5:49 still left in the first quarter giving the Tigers a 14-0 lead.C.J. Young was a workhorse for the Bulldogs and he kept the team close carrying five times in a nine-play drive that saw him cross the goal line from the two with just over seven minutes left in the half.Snyder's TD after the blocked punt and a 48-yard run giving Hall his third score of the night widened the Northwestern's lead to 25-6 entering the final quarter."Dylan (Snyder) was making some good decisions when he was out in space and could have probably done it a couple of more times," said Snyder. "You like your chances giving Harry the ball and the more chances he has, he's going to pop one."Northern Lehigh head coach Joe Tout also felt the blocked punt turned the game around."We were in the game in the first half," he said. We were sloppy and they were sloppy."We went in at halftime feeling pretty good. We talked about big games, with all the momentum swings, we were only down a score and were getting the ball to start the second half. But we came out and didn't move the ball and the blocked punt was the killer. That's been our Achilles. Our special teams let us down in that area. After that we didn;t have any luck. The injuries piled up and at the end you just don't know who you have."PLAYOFF CLINCHER ... With the win, Northwestern clinched a District 11 Class AA playoff berth and with a victory next week in their home finale, they will clinch home field advantage for the semifinals.BIG FOOT ... Northwestern's Brandon Miller has continued to impress with his kicking abilities and Friday night was no exception. It wasn't one of the mistake-free games you will ever see. There were five interceptions thrown and six fumbles, with three of them being lost.
