Marian's Capparell sisters finish 1-2

BETHLEHEM - Tina Capparell didn't need a lot of motivation prior to Thursday's District 11 Cross Country Championships.

Capparell, who won the Class A title a year ago, was coming off a fifth place finish at last week's Schuylkill League meet and eager to show she was back in top form. The sophomore didn't waste any time reestablishing herself, blitzing Bethlehem Municipal's Executive Course in 20:44 to capture her second straight title. And this time, Capparell had company on the podium, as sister Nicole, a freshman, took second in 21:13.The duo was well ahead of third place finisher McKayla Lally of Pine Grove, who came through in 21:59."I'm pretty happy with how I ran," said Tina. "But I was nervous because I wasn't sure how it was going to go."Tina and Nicole took any drama out of the race early, as the two sprinted away from the pack at the start."We always practice that, starting fast," said Tina. "But it wasn't something we talked about or planned ahead of time."The finishing order, on the other hand, was by design."Our goal was to go 1-2, and I'm so happy we were able to do it," said Tina. The impressive performances came as no surprise to Marian head coach Jeremy Dormer, who has watched the pair work together with great success in a variety of races throughout Northeast Pennsylvania during the offseason."They push each other hard and they work hard," he said. "But they also have a love and support for each other, and a passion for the sport, that's helped them to get where they are."What they did today was awesome. I try to give them what they need. But this was all them. I couldn't be happier or more proud of them."After watching Tina go to Hershey as a freshman, Nicole is eager to follow in her sister's footsteps, and to also have the chance to keep her company at what will be the biggest meet of the year."She's really going to be able to help me a lot since she's been there before," said Nicole. "It's amazing just to be able to go out there. But it definitely feels good to go with someone else, especially my sister."While Tina Capparell was to duplicate her performance for a second straight year to win another Class A title, the Northwestern girls were unable to do so in AA competition. After winning three straight district championships, the Lady Tigers relinquished their crown to Allentown Central Catholic, which won the team title with 50 points to Northwestern's 61.After experiencing so much success, including five straight Colonial League championships and a duel meet win streak that dates back to 2010, head coach Chris Stitzel was understandably disappointed. But he was equally proud of those accomplishments, and the fact the fact that the Lady Tigers will once again be sending a team to Hershey."We gave it our all and that's all I ask of the girls, just to leave it all on the course today," he said. "I just wanted it (a district championship) for our seniors this year, knowing how hard they worked. This was their goal - winning leagues and districts and getting out to states."But hats off to Central Catholic. They just put a great race together and we just couldn't overcome those top girls."The Vikettes' top five recorded finishes of 2-3-6-11-28, while the Lady Tigers came in 5-7-12-16-21.Northwestern's top runner was "Jolly" Molly Tarvin (fifth, 20:19), who noted that running for a program with such a rich heritage drives those that are on the team now."It's good to be able to take their place," Tarvin said of past runners. "We got a text from Lindsay Kerr (two-time District 11 champion, 2009 PIAA champion) just wishing us luck. The alumni are always watching over us and encouraging us, which is great."Joining Northwestern in Hershey from the AA field will be Tamaqua's Sarah Maue (13th, 21:03) and Kailee Carroll (17th, 21:38)."It feels great to make it to states, and to do it with one of my best friends," said Carroll.Added Maue, "I didn't know how well I would do - you have god days and bad days. But I tried my very best and it's amazing."A pair of Pleasant Valley girls qualified in the Class AAA field. Jenn Mickens (12th, 20:19) will be making her second straight trip to Hershey, while Lizz Eberhardt (15th, 20:41) will be competing for the third straight year.District 11 Cross CountryChampionshipsGirlsClass AAATeam scores and legend1. *Easton (E) 54, 2. *Stroudsburg (S) 70, 3.
