Lehighton rallies for boys soccer win

It wasn't the best of starts for the Lehighton soccer team.

But the way the high-scoring Indians can finish offensively, they never doubted they would find a way to finish out a victory.Lehighton did just that as it rallied from a a pair of first half deficits to beat Notre Dame of Green Pond, 9-5 on Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the District 11 Class AA boys soccer tournament. The second-seeded Indians trailed 2-0 just over 10 minutes into the contest, but they never panicked."The wind was really playing havoc with the ball for both teams," said Lehighton coach Dave Yob. "It was probably gusting up to 25 miles an hour which can make things difficult."I was confident that once we got the wind at our backs in the second half that we would be alright."Yob was right, but it didn't even take until the second half to see overcoming an early deficit wasn't going to be a problem.Lehighton got goals from Patrick Lawler, Zach Christoff and Joe Marks in the span of 11 minutes to take a 3-2 lead. After the Crusaders regained the advantage, Marks hammered home a rebound with 2:39 left to send the teams into halftime knotted at 4-4."I'm always confident in our offense and ability to score," said Marks. "We talked at halftime about the need to step up our game and I thought we did that. We passed the ball better and communicated better and that helped us pull away."Lawler got the second half off to a good start for the Indians scoring just over 30 seconds in and then following that up with a bauutiful header off a corner kick by Frank Bokan that made it 6-4 with 36:47 remaining."Any time you fall behind early like we did, especially in an elimination game, you're a little nervous," said Lawler. "But we're very confident in our ability to score, so I never doubted that we could turn it around."At halftime we talked about how we wanted to keep attacking and keep the pressure on and it paid off for us."Marks followed Lawler's two second half goals with a pair of his own as the Indians opened a four-goal lead with just under 25 minutes remaining."We have a really unselfish team," said Yob. "I think that's been the big reason we've scored as many goals (120 total and 5.7 per game) as we have this season."The kids look for each other and nobody cares about their own stats. The only stat they care about is getting 'W's."SCORING BLITZ ... Marks with four goals and Lawler with three both had hat tricks while Christoff added a pair of scores. Bokan hit two perfect corners to earn assists while Dan Baka (two), Marks, Zeka Elkhyati and Dylan Kleintop also added assists.RAPID FIRE ... Lehighton turned a 4-3 deficit around by scoring five times in the span of just 17 minutes and 46 seconds from late in the first half to early in the second.NEXT UP ... Lehighton (19-2) will take an 18-game winning streak into Tuesday's semifinal match against Salisbury.
