Few contested races on northern Carbon ballots

If the number of contested races in municipalities in northern Carbon County is any indication of voting activity on Tuesday, it is likely a low voter turnout can be expected.

That is because there are only three challenged races in which voters have decisions to make in the General Election of 2015: the positions of Weatherly Mayor, a two-year term on the Weatherly Area School District Board of Education and challenges for school board seats in the Hazleton Area School District. In that balloting, only Banks Township and Beaver Meadows residents who reside in Carbon will participate, joining numerous municipalities in lower Luzerne County that make up the district. Here is a look at what voters in northern Carbon County can expect to see:Weatherly BoroughThe mayor's race is between Democrat Tom Connors and Republican Norman B. Richie. A four-year term is up for grabs.Meanwhile, borough voters are scheduled to elect two council members to four-year terms. There are only two candidates, Democrat Joseph M. Cyburt and Republican George E Miller Jr.A six-year term as constable is also on the ballot although there are no candidates for the position.Weatherly School BoardIn the school board balloting, voters in Lausanne, Lehigh and Packer townships, as well as those in Kidder Township North, join voters in East Side and Weatherly boroughs in seating six directors this year. The contested race is for one two-year term that is up for grabs. The candidates are Democrat Matthew D. vonFrisch and Republican Gerard Grega. There are also five four-year terms on the board to be filled, although five people, including vonFrisch and Grega, appear to be unopposed, having won both Democratic and Republican nominations in the primary. The other three candidates are William Knepper, Corey Gerhart and Georgeann Herling.Hazleton School BoardFive people won both Democratic and Republican nominations for five available four-year terms on the Hazleton School Board, but they have opposition in November due to four people getting their names on the ballots as Independents or nonpartisan candidates. The Banks Township and Beaver Meadows ballots will have Vinnie Zola, Tony Bonomo, Robert Fiume, Jackie Scarcella and Marie Kay as Democratic and Republican candidates. Challenging them are Robert Childs, Thomas J. Chirico and Lori Losen, Independents, and Casey Herseim, no party affiliation.Banks TownshipMeanwhile, six other northern Carbon County municipalities all have uncontested races, starting with Banks Township. The voters there are scheduled to elect two members to the board of supervisors, and two candidates are unopposed: Richard Porpiglia, seeking a six-year term, and Charles J. Schalles, who is running for a two-year term.David J. Bodnar Jr. is unopposed in pursuit of a six-year term as a township auditor and Bruce Knepper has no opposition for a six-year term as constable. All five candidates are Democrats.Lausanne TownshipThere are no candidates on the Lausanne ballot.Voters are slated to elect a supervisor, auditor and constable, all for six-year terms, and also an auditor for a four-year term.Lehigh TownshipSupervisor Larry D. Skinner is the only candidate on the Lehigh Township ballot. A Republican, he is unchallenged as he seeks another six-year term on the board. There are no candidates for either the auditor or constable's positions, both six-year terms, that are also on the ballot.Packer TownshipPacker Township voters will see only two names on the township's municipal ballot.William Swinesburg, a Republican incumbent, is seeking re-election to a six-year term on the board of supervisors and George J. Bozar III, another Republican, is seeking the six-year term as constable. There are no candidates on the ballot for a four-year term as township supervisor or a six-year term on the board of auditors.Beaver MeadowsVoters in Beaver Meadows are expected to fill four four-year terms on the borough council. There are only three candidates for the posts, including Democrats Anthony J. Rusnock and Alfred J. Mitcho Jr. and Republican Kevin F. Hines. No one is running for the two-year term on council; three auditors' positions, for two-, four- and six-years; nor the six-year term as constable.East Side BoroughThere are no challenged races in East Side Borough since there are only four candidates for four four-year terms to be filled on the borough council. All Democrats, they include Rudolph C. Schoch, Helen Stockinger, Francis A. Becker and John P. Marotta.Borough voters are also slated to elect someone to a six-year term as constable, although no one is seeking the office.District JusticeIncumbent Magisterial District Judge Joseph D. Homanko Sr. is running for re-election to another six-year term.
