Only one contested race in Palmerton area

One single race exists on the municipal ballots in lower Carbon County for Tuesday's General Election.

That challenge will take place in Lower Towamensing Township, where two candidates are running for a six-year term on the board of supervisors.In three other municipalities - Towamensing Township and Bowmanstown and Palmerton boroughs - everyone who is running for positions is doing so without opposition.That is also the case in the Palmerton Area School District Board of Education balloting.Here is a look at what lower Carbon County voters can expect to see when they vote in their respective municipalities:Lower Towamensing TownshipThe supervisors race is between Jesse Mendez, a Democrat, and Jay Mullikin, a Republican.Democrat Lamar Fronheiser is the only other person on the township's ballot. He is running without opposition for a six-year term as constable.Township voters are also expected to elect two auditors, for two-year and six-year terms. There are no candidates for the posts.Towamensing TownshipThere is only one candidate on the Towamensing Township ballot. He is Thomas F. Newman, a Republican running unchallenged for the six-year term on the board of supervisors.Three other offices up for grabs have no candidates. They are four-year and six-year terms as auditors and a six-year term as constable.Bowmanstown BoroughBowmanstown voters are scheduled to elect three people to four-year terms on the borough council, and there are only three candidates.They are Democrat Kara Scott and Republicans Pamela J. Leiby and Norman A. Engle Jr.Republican Salvatore Lizzio is the only other borough candidate. He is unopposed as he pursues a six-year term as constable.Palmerton BoroughPalmerton's situation is exactly like that of Bowmanstown. Three people are seeking three four-year terms on the borough council, and one other candidate appears on the ballot for the constable's post.Running unopposed for the council positions are Democrats Jeremy Barbosa and Holly Hausman Sell and Republican Terry L. Costenbader.Democrat Gavin Oplinger is the lone candidate for the six-year term as constable.Palmerton School BoardIn the school board race in Palmerton, in which voters from the above four municipalities participate, there is no contest this year. Five people are seeking five four-year terms that are available.They include Tammy L. Recker and Josann M. Harry, who appear on both the Democratic and Republican ballots, having won nominations in each party in May; Democrats Joshua C. Smale and Sherry A. Cseh-Haas; and Republican Charles G. Gildner.
