Marian adjusts to sink Nativity
Adapt and react.
That's exactly what the Marian volleyball team had to do on Tuesday. After dropping the first game to Nativity 26-24 in the Schuylkill League semifinal, the Fillies adjusted. Those adjustments paid off as they took the next three games 25-11, 25-21, and 25-23 to advance to the Schuylkill League championship on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Martz Hall in Pottsville against Blue Mountain. After Nativity won the opening game, it was evident that big-time Fillies hitters Abby Stankiewitch and Jasmine Mooney weren't getting the scoring opportunities they've grown accustomed to getting. The Nativity win turned out to also be an opportunity for the Fillies to show they can handle adversity."Nativity gave us all we could handle tonight," said Stankiewitch. "But we battled back. Not everything is going to be perfect for us all the time, especially with the postseason ahead of us. It was good for us to come back and win tonight in that type of situation."Battle back is exactly what the Fillies did. The Fillies changed some things around and just like that the advantage was in their favor. Stankiewitch and Mooney were now in position to attack the middle of the Green Wave defense and they converted. The two combined for 35 kills on the night."We made some adjustments after the first set that put our middle hitters in a better position to score," said Marian head coach John "Doc" Fallabel. "After we did that, our girls played well, they battled back, and were able to make the big play when it mattered. I say this all the time. Big-time players show up in big-time situations."Nativity gave it everything it had in the fourth game, actually leading 22-19. However, Stankiewitch once again was there for the Fillies. She had seven kills in the game, including the final point, which sealed the game and the match. For the Green Wave, Jocelyn Holobetz had 15 kills, 11 digs, and two blocks in a valiant effort.TWIN TOWERS ... Marian's Stankiewitch and Mooney were a force for the Fillies on Tuesday. Stankiewitch came through with 19 kills and three blocks, while her sophomore partner in crime (Mooney) had 16 kills, four aces, and 18 digs. "We just try to make the best of the scoring opportunities we're given out there," said Mooney. "We're pretty confident that we can convert scoring opportunities and we just try to do the best we can to help our team."WORKING HARD ... Stankiewitch and Mooney weren't the only Fillies working hard on Tuesday. Gianna Agosti led the team with 19 digs, while Courtney McCall and Maureen Kloap each came through with 16 digs.THREE PEAT? ... The Fillies will be looking to win their third consecutive Schuylkill League championship on Thursday at Martz Hall. Standing in their way is Blue Mountain, who the Fillies defeated in four games back on Sept. 24.
