An inaugural run/walk held in honor of a beloved language arts teacher in the Tamaqua Area School District has netted even more money than originally anticipated.
As of Monday, updated figures showed that about $8,000 was raised during the Supurban 5K fun run/walk held Saturday at Tamaqua Area High School.Held in honor of the late Thelma Urban, the event was organized by students and teachers, and drew about 125 runners and another 80 walkers. The Class of 2015 arranged to have the stadium available for the event.Initial figures showed the event raised about $4,243 Saturday, and about $6,400 all together, according to alumna Emily Zancofsky, one of seven organizers.Alumni Kyle Weaver, who along with Zancofsky initiated the event, said, "we did not account for a private donation on Saturday when we sent out our totals. This does not change the $4,243 total raised solely on Saturday."Urban, a popular language arts teacher, passed away suddenly in June. Her husband, Michael, participated, as did his family, including the couple's children, Sean, 6, and Violet, 4.Proceeds from the event will help provide for the Urban children's educations, and for a scholarship for a graduating senior who plans a career in a language arts field.Runners traversed the 3.1-mile cross-country track that circles around school property.Andrew Waber, 29, of Mary D, won first place among males with a time of 21:23. Kailee Carroll, 16, of Tamaqua, finished as the top female with a time of 22:27.
