Bears advance to EPC semis

One of the most difficult things for a goalkeeper is to stop the opposition on a penalty kick.

The pressure the goalie faces is magnified when the penalty kicks are part of a postseason overtime. But don't tell that to Pleasant Valley goalkeeper Mikaela Miller.Miller made it look easy on Saturday when her outstanding play helped the Bears beat Easton in the quarterfinal round of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference playoffs. After Pleasant Valley and Easton played to a scoreless tie after regulation and two overtime periods, Miller was put on the spot during the five-player penalty kick shootout. The Bears' Abby Leach capitalized on her penalty kick and then Miller stood strong, dove and deflected the Red Rovers' first attempt.Erica Neff then pushed the ball past Red Rover keeper Sarah Lutz to the back right side of the net. Miller watched a Red Rover attempt sail right over her head.Erin Sharpe made it 3-for-3 for the Bears when she drilled a shot to the lower left of the cage. The Red Rovers' Alyssa Canone beat Miller to keep her team's hopes alive. But Morgan Covart went top shelf on the left side of the net to beat Lutz and clinch the Pleasant Valley victory."I always watch their eyes," Miller said about her shootout strategy. "Sometimes they try to mislead you and then they make it too obvious."Pleasant Valley coach Derek Strohl was glad to see Miller come through when the Bears needed her the most."She has been a force for us all year," Strohl said. "We have two great goalies. Renee (Milos) played the first half and Mikaela had the rest of the regulation and overtime. They feed off of each other."We work on penalty kicks at practice. We have been doing so the last four or five practices and both of the keepers are pretty good at it. With Mikaela, there's just something there that you can't coach with the way she can read the play as a keeper.SEMIFINALS ARE SET ... No. 7 seed Pleasant Valley will take on No. 3 seed Whitehall at 5:30, while No. 5 Nazareth will take on No. 1 seed Parkland at 7:30. The site is to be determined.SCORING CHANCES ... Pleasant Valley took 18 shots during the two 40 minute halves of regulation and two 15 minute overtime periods and still couldn't get a goal. Seven of those came in the first half. Easton took nine shots during regulation, but the Bears' defense held the Red Rovers without a shot during the two overtime periods.SHARING DUTIES ... Milos started in goal for the Bears and recorded five saves. Miller took over at the start of the second half and remained between the PV posts for both overtimes. Miller finished with four saves.REDEMPTION SEIZED ... Pleasant Valley traveled to Easton during the regular season. It was another close contest, but it was the Red Rover who scored a 1-0 victory over the Bears thanks to a Laine Vincent second half goal. Miller was in the PV net for the goal. "I wanted revenge and I got it," Miller said.
