Autumn lecture series at Hawk Mountain

Two free lectures will take place at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Kempton this weekend.

On Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Margaret Barker-Frankel, author and educator, will present "Feeding Wild Birds and Good Bird Homes."Bird feeding may be a hobby, but it also has its own unique history. Join Barker-Frankel to explore these historical roots, learn how raptors have played a role in the evolution of bird feeding, and see charming images of bird-feeding sites from long ago.Co-author of the new book, "Feeding Wild Birds," she also coordinated the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Project FeederWatch in the early to mid-1990s.On Sunday at 1 p.m. Barker-Frankel will present "Good Bird Homes," based on the recent Audubon's Birdhouse Book, a publication that she co-authored and that features Hawk Mountain's kestrel nest box program.During the presentation, she will share the latest in bird home design and safety for birds that live inside boxes, such as bluebirds and kestrels, and those that live outside boxes on human structures, such great blue herons and ospreys. Both lectures will take place in the visitor center. The sanctuary is located at 1700 Hawk Mountain Road in Kempton.
