Weatherly notches first girls soccer victory

The Weatherly girls soccer team picked up its first win of the season in scholastic weekend action.

BOYS SOCCERJim Thorpe-Pine GroveThe two sides battled evenly for a majority of the game, before Pine Grove put in two late scores for a 2-0 win over Jim Thorpe.David Shedden started the scoring for the Cardinals, before teammate Michael Elo added an insurance goal less than three minutes later.The Olympians' Phillip Struble had 12 saves for the locals in net.Lehighton-No. SchuylkillJoe Marks accounted two goals and one assist in Lehighton's 8-1 Schuylkill League win over North Schuylkill.Frank Bokan followed with two goals, while Patrick Lawler chipped in with a goal and three assists.Dan Baka (goal, assist), Zach Christoff (goal) and Dan Sharp (goal) all contributed in the victory.Moravian Academy-Pleasant ValleyPleasant Valley and Moravian Academy ended up in a 0-0 tie.The Bears' Brad Brickman finished with 11 saves to preserve the shutout.Schuylkill Haven-TamaquaThe Hurricanes proved how strong they are with an 8-0 win over Tamaqua in Schuylkill League action.Dawson Evitts scored four goals and added an assist in the win, while teammate Owen Pothering scored three goals and assisted three others.Roberto Uribe Xacur scored the final goal for the Hurricanes, while Ben Connors and Tyler Bartol added assists.Hunter Banavage had seven saves for the Blue Raiders in the loss.Palisades-PalmertonAfter a 1-1 halftime deadlock, both offenses came alive with Palisades outlasting Palmerton 6-4 in a Colonial high scoring match.Cooper Moyer notched four goals in the winning effort. Berks Catholic then went on to knock off Garden Spot 25-19, 25-21 to claim the tourney title.Maureen Kloap led the Fillies with 23 digs, 21 kills and 10 aces, while Jasmine Mooney followed with 26 kills, 21 digs and nine aces.Courtney McCall (63 assists, seven aces, seven digs) and Abigail Stankiewitch (32 kills, five aces) chipped in during the tourney run.
