Man charged with using aunt's card

A Nesquehoning man accused of using his aunt's debit card to make over $700 in unauthorized withdrawals and purchases was arraigned Wednesday on charges of access device fraud and identity theft.

Michael Atkinson, 25, of East Columbus Avenue, posted his $2,000 unsecured bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 21 in front of Magisterial District Judge Casimir Kosciolek.According to Nesquehoning Officer Richard Neikam, Atkinson's aunt gave him her card on May 1 and told him to pay her $300 water and sewer bill.Three additional charges, however, were posted to the aunt's account. The charges included $501.75 for a withdrawal at the Turkey Hill PNC Bank ATM machine in Nesquehoning, and two purchases, $105.19 and $102.65, at Redner's Warehouse Market.Atkinson, who the victim said was addicted to heroin, called her on May 5 to tell her he owed a lot of people money and he was sorry, according to Neikam's affidavit of probable cause.Police were not able to clearly locate Atkinson on surveillance video from the bank, but did get a positive identification from Redner's footage.A warrant was issued in June after police were unable to locate Atkinson.
