Northern Lehigh cruises by Palisades

KINTNERSVILLE - Northern Lehigh quarterback Chad Cederburg knows he isn't going to get to pass often. So he makes the most of his opportunities.

The senior completed four of his six passes, including two touchdowns, in leading the Bulldogs to a 32-7 win over Palisades on the Pirates homecoming night."It felt great," said Cederburg. "We're a heavy run team so throwing the ball and getting two touchdowns was pretty good. They always expect the run so our receivers are wide open."Cederburg played just as big a role in the Bulldogs' running game as he did in the passing game. He rushed 18 times for 98 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also made some fine decisions in the option game as the Bulldogs wore down the Pirates, pounding out 287 yards on 43 carries on the wet artificial turf."All the success came from our linemen and Chad Cederburg giving good pitches," said running back CJ Young, who piled up 114 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.Young's 62-yard return on the game's opening kick off set up the Bulldogs with a short field on their first drive. They went 25 yards in seven plays, capped by Cederburg's 3-yard run for an early 7-0 lead. The Bulldog defense came up big later in the first half.A three-and-out and a 10-yard punt gave Palisades the ball at the Northern Lehigh 16-yard line. The Pirates gained just six yards before turning the ball over on downs. After Young fumbled two plays later, it set up the Pirates with a first down at the Bulldog 9-yard line.Young helped make sure the turnover didn't cost his team. The senior defensive back was in on three tackles in the next four plays to keep Palisades out of the end zone. A third-down false start at the 1-yard line also aided the Bulldog effort and kept the Pirates off the board in the first quarter."The goal line stops were massive," said Young. "If we hadn't stopped them there it would have been a closer game."After getting the ball back at the 3-yard line, Young busted a 57-yard run on first down and seven plays later plunged into the end zone from a yard out for a 13-0 lead with 4:55 left in the first half.Palisades (2-3) responded, driving 80 yards in 12 plays to cut the lead at halftime to 13-7."To get those two stands," said Northern Lehigh head coach Joe Tout, "then give up that touchdown right before half, then you have to kick off [to start the second half] so you know you lose all that momentum . But our kids came out and grabbed it."The Bulldogs forced a three-and-out to start the second half then marched 68 yards in eight plays as Cederburg scored from a yard out to give his team a 20-7 lead.On the Bulldogs' next possession, Cederburg executed an option pitch to Young 21 yards down the field for a 36-yard gain. The drive ended with his 11-yard touchdown pass to Kellen Hendrix for a 26-7 lead with 11:54 left in the game."We ran a different version of the option this week," said Tout. "The option with Chad when he pitched it [21] yards downfield, that was awesome."Northern Lehigh capped the scoring when Cederburg hit Brandon Smith with a 6-yard strike with 5:10 left in the fourth quarter.DEFIANT DEFENSE...In the second half, Northern Lehigh gave up just one first down to Palisades' first team in four possessions after intermission.RUN STOPPERS...The Bulldogs gave up just 85 rushing yards to the Pirates starters before the second team came in and added 28 more in the final minutes.DOING IT ALL...In addition to his big night throwing the ball. And running the ball. And making nifty option pitches. And making tackles from his defensive back position, Cederburg also picked off a Palisades pass.BOUNCING BACK...The Bulldogs (3-2) rebounded from last week's loss to Notre Dame (Green Pond). It's the second time this season they've bounced back as they beat Wilson a week after losing to Saucon Valley.
