Polk Township is preparing for winter road conditions

Polk Township has stockpiled 92 tons of salt in preparation for the upcoming winter driving months, according to Supervisor Brian Ahner. In addition, the supervisors also agreed to purchase two new plows at a cost of $9,596 for the two.

"We have three plows that spent a lot of time being repaired last year," Ahner said. "They don't break during the summer months, they only break when you need them."The new plows will hook up to the existing trucks without needing any alterations. Ahner said if one breaks down, the truck can drop it at the garage and pick up one of the spare plows and get back onto the streets faster.Roads were the main theme at Monday night's meeting. The township will be posting 25 mph signs on two sections of Polk Township Road where it intersects with HTY Road and Burger Hollow Road. The change is due to numerous complaints about speeding around the elementary school children and school buses. The issue of speeding also came up in regard to Dotters Corner Road. Resident Conrad Caputo told the supervisors that despite the 35 mph and 25 mph signs on the road, that speeding is out of control."We don't know what to do," said Caputo. "People fly down that road. Someone is going to get hurt and we are concerned as parents and residents, we appreciate everything that you can do to help."Township solicitor James Fareri explained that the township is not permitted by law to add stop signs as a means to control speed. The township did agree to increase the number of speed limit signs along the road and will be asking the state police to increase the number of patrols on the road as well.Donna Diehl of Eldred Township addressed the board regarding the proposed water extraction in Eldred Township by Nestle NA."Nestle is proposing on running 35 trucks in and 35 trucks out every day, seven days a week, 24 hours a day," Diehl said. "The proposed route is Kunkletown Road to Silver Springs Boulevard and onto Route 209."Ahner said, "We are aware of the proposed route. We have some concerns about the increase in truck traffic and the conditions of the roads."
