ONCE IN A RED MOON

The shadow almost completely covers the moon at 10:08 p.m. Sunday, causing it to appear red in the sky. The rare astronomical phenomenon happens when a total lunar eclipse combines with a so-called supermoon. When a full moon makes its closest approach to Earth, it appears slightly bigger and brighter than usual and has a reddish hue. It was the first time the events have made a twin appearance since 1982, and they won't again until 2033. The event lasted about an hour. BOB FORD/TIMES
