Tribe's late drive defeats BM
Lehighton hasn't faced too much adversity this season.
But in Friday night's showdown against Blue Mountain, the Indians definitely had their backs against the wall.Faced with a fourth-quarter deficit for the first time all year, Tom McCarroll's club responded in a big way.Led by the poise of quarterback Tyler Cann and the brute strength of Wyatt Clements, Lehighton marched 80 yards in 10 plays to score the go-ahead touchdown with 1:26 left to play. The Indians held that lead and posted an important 36-29 Anthracite League victory in a battle of unbeaten teams."Our kids really battled," said McCarroll, whose club started that game-winning drive with 5:15 to go in the fourth quarter. "It's nice to see how they bounced back from (losing the lead). That just speaks to the kind of kids we have here. Our kids just made plays when they needed to."I'm extremely proud but not surprised. We try to do as much as we can at practice to make it game-situational. We throw out different types of adversity at them ... We'll get all over them, even verbally, to challenge them and see how they respond mentally. This group of kids always responds, though. They answer the bell every single time."Despite leading for most of the contest, including a 28-14 margin at halftime, the Indians (4-0; 4-0) watched their advantage disappear slowly but surely. Mike Kalyan completed Blue Mountain's first possession of the second half with a six-yard scoring run. After a three-and-out by the Indians, a snap over their punter's head went out of the end zone for a safety to cut the Tribe's advantage to 28-22.Blue Mountain (3-1; 2-1) completed its impressive comeback with its first touch of the fourth quarter. Two completeions from Mason Freed to Spencer Welsh set up Matt Kalyan's three-yard burst into the end zone to put the visitors ahead 29-28.But all that did was set the stage for Cann, Clements and Co."We knew that we had to drive the ball down the field," said Clements. "We knew that if we scored our defense would hold them after that. We weren't going to lose confidence no matter what happened during the drive. We knew we had what it took to drive down the field. It was just a matter of ... making plays."Lehighton came up with a number of huge plays during that game-winning march. Cann hit Tegan Durishin for a 27-yard hook-up and found Erik Skrinkosky for a 32-yard strike over the middle. Both plays came on third-and-longs to extend the drive.Clements concluded the dramatic series with a six-yard run to the end zone that put Lehighton back on top."I'm going to be honest with you," said Clements. "All I had on my mind once the ball was snapped was that I was going to get in the end zone, no matter what.""We had an idea what we wanted to do on that drive," said McCarroll. "We knew some things worked against them at certain points of the game. We just had to get a couple matchups that we thought were favorable."That was a total team effort. Wyatt and Tyler make plays every game but we got them from other kids too. Erik Skrinkosky make some nice catches, Tegan Durishin has been doing really well all year. Nick Chambers, Gavin Zehner both made big plays at certain times. They did it tonight and they've done it during the whole season."CANN CAN ... Cann finished with a pair of touchdown passes, one to Chambers and another to Zehner. The senior, who threw for 229 yards, had one stretch where he completed 10 straight passes.SPECIAL TEAMS WEAPON ... Blue Mountain kicker Christian Puzzi booted all five of his kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks. Puzzi, however, missed an extra point, while the Indians Ben Cordova was a perfect 4-of-4.EAGLE DEFENDER ... Blue Mountain's defensive lineman Erech Noecker was a force inside. The junior had three tackles for loss, dropping Clements behind the line twice and Cann once.RUSHING ATTACK ... Clements finished with 159 yards rushing, including six gains of 10 yards or more. His biggest gain of 27 yards helped set up his team's first touchdown. The Eagles' Mike Kalyan had 124 yards on the ground, 104 of them coming in the first half.
