Nesquehoning will get $5K for crash

Nesquehoning Borough will receive just over $5,000 to cover emergency services for a crash that occurred in the town in November 2013.

On Tuesday, borough solicitor Robert Yurchak announced that Nesquehoning was awarded $5,500 through arbitration from the Kresge Electric incident."It's double what we had been awarded before (from District Judge Casimir Kosciolek) and about half of what we were asking for," Yurchak told council.Council agreed it should accept the amount.Nesquehoning Emergency Management officer and Nesquehoning Hose Company No. 1 fire chief John McArdle provided council with a breakdown of how the money will be distributed.Distribution of the funds will be to pay bills that have yet to be settled, or if the bill had been paid, the amount will go back into the general fund as reimbursement for the payment.Entities that were involved in the incident included Nesquehoning Hose Company, West End Mahanoy City, Lansford, Summit Hill, Hometown, Lehighton Ambulance, Nesquehoning Ambulance, Carbon Engineering, Salvation Army, Panther Valley Lumber and Yurchak. The arbitration stems from the crash on Nov. 11, 2013, when a Kresge Electric truck lost control and traveled off Catawissa Street, struck a utility pole, bringing down wires and hit the front porch of a residence.Emergency crews responded to the 300 block of East Catawissa, which was shut down to traffic so repairs to the pole could be made and the house that was damaged, stabilized so the residents inside would be safe.Following the crash, Nesquehoning borough filed for reimbursement of services from the company, asking for $12,000 to cover all the costs associated with the incident. On July 16, 2014, Kosciolek ruled that the borough should be awarded approximately $3,000.At the time, council voted to appeal the decision.Other businessIn other matters, council acted on or discussed the following items: • Council again discussed trucks crossing the Tippets Road bridge into Lake Hauto that were over the weight limit. Residents voiced that because of the excessive weight, the bridge has been deteriorating and sinking. Council sent a letter to the Lake Hauto Club last month regarding this and said Wednesday that it will send a letter to PennDOT to have them take a look at things and will look into posting signs along Route 54 so that trucks know the bridge is posted before turning onto the road.• Adopted the 2016 minimal Municipal Obligations for the pensions plans for the police in the amount of $113,531 and for the non-uniform employees in the amount of $17,297.• Mayor Sam Kitchko said that for the month of August, police collected $2,329.59; issued 60 citations; had 456 incidents reported and drove 2,834 miles while on patrol.• Adopted the resolution for the LSA grant application on behalf of Nesquehoning Hose Company for its expansion project. The amount being sought is just under $400,000.• Approved the Nesquehoning Hose Company's requests to participate in Fire Prevention Week on Oct. 9; and fill the steam engine 425 during its full-day excursions to Jim Thorpe on Oct. 10, 11, 17 and 18.• Approved the mutual aid agreement with Tamaqua for emergency services.
