October named Bullying Prevention Month

Schuylkill County commissioners on Wednesday proclaimed October Bullying Prevention Month in the county.

"It's a problem all over, not just in schools. It's happening face-to-face and by social media," said Commissioner Gary J. Hess."Everyone was put on Earth for a reason, and everybody should be treated as equal."Being picked on can lead to depression and suicide, he said."Everyone just needs to learn to get along, and to respect one another's individuality," Hess said.Bullying is the most common form of violence, affecting millions of children and teenagers each year, according to the proclamation."We urge all young people and adults to take seriously how bullying affects others. Don't just be a bystander - stand up against bullying," commissioners said.In other matters, commissioners approved repository sales bids for seven properties, including two in Tamaqua. They are 132 and 134 Orwigsburg St.Matthew Arik Stahler bid $1,030 for 134 Orwigsburg St. and $1,036 for 132 Orwigsburg St.In other matters, commissioners approved change orders for Heim Construction's repair of a Pine Grove bridge.The bridge, on Spitler Road, spans Swatara Creek. The change orders increase the cost by $301.50.The total change orders are: 4.5 cubic yards of class AA concrete, a $5,139 increase; seven linear feet of 12-inch diameter compost filter sock, a $213.50 increase; seeding and soil supplement E, a $1,656 decrease; seeding and soil supplement C, a $920 decrease; and epoxy injection crack sealing, a $2,475 decrease.There will be no commissioners' meeting next week.The next meeting will be a work session meeting at 10 a.m. Oct. 7.
