Andreas man gets probation for hurting infant son

An Andreas man will serve five years of probation and take anger management classes for injuring his infant son last year.

But Travis Garris, 26, told Schuylkill County Judge John Domalakes on Wednesday that it didn't happen the way police say it did.According to a criminal complaint, Garris was caring for the 4-month old boy on Sept. 29, 2014, while the baby's mother was at work. When she returned home, she immediately saw severe bruising on the left side of the baby's head and took the child to a hospital in Pottsville. After providing initial treatment, doctors transferred the baby to the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, where he was treated for a fractured skull, bleeding in the brain and facial bruises.According to the police report, Garris said the child fell while in his care, but doctors determined the injuries were consistent with those being caused by slapping, not falling.Garris, at his plea hearing Wednesday insisted to Domalakes that he "left him on the couch and he fell on his own."Garris entered a "nolo contendere" plea, meaning he does not admit to the facts as reported by police, but agreed that prosecutors would be able to prove their case against him beyond a reasonable doubt in court.Garris pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child and simple assault.Garris had been charged by state police at Frackville with two counts of aggravated assault and one count each of simple assault, child endangerment and reckless endangerment.
