Carbon County Court - DUI cases

A total of eight defendants, charged with driving under the influence, entered guilty pleas in Carbon County court on Tuesday.

Judge Joseph J. Matika accepted pleas from the following:Scott E. Gallagher, 29, of Weatherly, was arrested on Nov. 5, 2014, along Spring Mountain Road, Banks Township, by state police at Hazleton. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.Matika deferred sentencing so Gallagher could obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation.Luis Alexis Diaz, 28, of Weatherly, was arrested on May 30, 2014, along Berwick Street by Beaver Meadows police. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.He was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, 1-year license suspension and render 25 hours of community service.He will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. on Oct. 2.Michael Kristen Peters, 43, of Nesquehoning, was arrested on Aug. 31, 2014, along Route 209 by Nesquehoning police. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.Sentencing was deferred so he could obtain a D&A evaluation.Prince S. Vereen, of Tamaqua, was arrested on March 10, 2013, in a checkpoint operation along Lentz Trail in Summit Hill. He also pleaded to a small amount of marijuana.Matika deferred sentencing so he could obtain a D&A evaluation.Kelly Joseph Washburn, 36, of Walnutport, was arrested on March 15 along Mill Road by Mahoning Township police at a checkpoint operation. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.He is currently serving a prison term in Lehigh County for a parole violation. Sentencing was deferred.Guillermo L. Candelario, 35, of Weatherly, was arrested on Feb. 13 along Broad Street by Beaver Meadows police. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.Sentencing was deferred so Candelario could get a D&A evaluation.Alex Quinones, 31, of Hazleton, was arrested on March 28 along Interstate 80 in East Side Borough by state police at Fern Ridge. A test showed 0.10 BAC.Sentencing was deferred so he could get a D&A evaluation.Amber Marie Wilk, 22, of Nesquehoning, and formerly of Lehighton, was arrested on April 28 along Route 209 in Nesquehoning by state police at Lehighton. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.She was sentenced to serve 5 days to 6 months in jail, a fine of $300, one-year license suspension, zero tolerance for D&A use, and render 25 hours of community service. He was fined $25 and costs on a summary motor vehicle code violation.She will serve the prison term on consecutive weekends beginning Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. for two days, then Oct. 23 at 10 a.m. for three days.Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
