STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State is trying to raise $50,000 to endow a scholarship honoring a state trooper killed in an ambush at his barracks last year.

Cpl. Bryon Dickson was gunned down outside the Blooming Grove barracks in the Poconos on Sept. 12, 2014. Eric Frein has pleaded not guilty; he was arrested after a 48-day manhunt in the woods for the survivalist.

Dickson was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who left behind a wife and two young sons. He was also a 2003 honors graduate of Penn State's administration of justice program. That degree is now called criminology.

The Centre Daily Times (http://bit.ly/1Pmffv9 ) reports a donor has pledged a $25,000 matching gift, in hopes others will donate the same amount.

That would be enough to award a $2,250 annual scholarship to a criminology major.
