Volunteers plan spa day for caregivers

Caregivers are notorious for taking care of everyone, except themselves.

That's why Connie Quinn, with the help of Linda Tomko, Carren Bynon and Teresa Johnson, have put together a much needed spa day for caregivers of disabled children. This day of pampering will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Salem Bible Fellowship Church located at 1105 Fredricks Grove Road in Lehighton.Hairdressers, manicurists and masseuses will be on hand to make sure these mothers, wives and sisters leave the church feeling refreshed.Mothers of children with special needs or caregivers for the disabled are encouraged to register for the Sept. 26 event."It will be a way for people to get to know each other," Quinn said.Carbon County and surrounding areas currently have very limited, if any, type of support group for parents or caregivers of the disabled, according to Quinn."We really think it's important to start this program around here," she said. Quinn and the other two moms are from all over the Carbon County area, Quinn lives in Jim Thorpe, Bynon in Lehighton and Tomko in Weatherly.Quinn is the mother of a disabled child herself. For over 20 years she and her son have participated in Joni and Friends International Ministry family retreat at Spruce Lake in Canadensis, where she met Tomko and Bynon. It was a natural fit to host the first spa day at Salem Fellowship, where Tomko is a member. The fellowship has a history of involvement in community events. After Quinn and Tomko talked about the idea they asked Johnson if the church would host the event."It's all on one level, there are no stairs and the parking is good. We talked to Teresa's husband, Pastor Johnson and they were all for helping us," Quinn said. The beautification artists are all volunteers. Quinn credits Facebook with helping connect her to the professionals for the upcoming day."People found our page and just wanted to help."To register, call 570-460-1264.To qualify all you have to do is be a mom or caregiver of a child with special needs or wife of a disabled spouse."We realize that dads are caregivers too. But this is our first year and we are still ironing out the details for the next event."Quinn expressed how important a day like this is for caregivers to come together and take a break."People in our area, just don't get it about people with disabilities and caregivers. Moms may need a break and can't get it because dad has to work two jobs or work over time. This will be a chance for moms/caregivers, to have a lunch they didn't have to make themselves."
