Lansford woman charged with burglary

A Lansford woman is accused of stealing jewelry from a friend.

Jessica Mongi, 28, was charged with burglary, receiving stolen property, and theft in the May 1 incident, according to a report released Monday by police.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by patrolman Jeffrey J. Tanner, a woman came to the police station to report items had been stolen from her Powell Street home. They included an 18-inch gold chain with a gold journey pendant with red and white stones, and her grandmother's gold and diamond ring.They were taken some time after April 22 from a jewelry box in her bedroom on the second floor of the house.The victim told police that Mongi was at the house with her boyfriend on April 23, and asked to use the bathroom, which is on the second floor. She went upstairs, then came down and wanted to leave.While Mongi was upstairs, she went into the victim's bedroom and took the jewelry, according to police.The items were found in a pawnshop in West Hazleton. The shop owner produced a receipt dated April 23 with Mongi's driver's license and signature on it. Mongi received $50 for the jewelry.The items were taken to the police station, where the victim identified them. Mongi came to the station for questioning, but would not waive her Miranda rights, and requested that her attorney be present for any questioning. The ring was appraised at $279 and the pendant at $499.
