Thorpe routs Devils

SHENANDOAH - Jim Thorpe's rushing attack took a page from the Washington Redskins approach - a throwback to the 1980s with counter tray runs, and the "hogs" in the trenches.

It was a perfect DNA for the 'Skins attack. It was also a perfect game plan for the Olympians Friday evening at Veterans Memorial Stadium.Jim Thorpe rang up an impressive 57-20 win, rushing for 403 yards, and using its special teams to score twice on kick returns to keep Shenandoah Valley winless (0-2AFL)."We're a run-first football team right now and that's what we wanted to do," Mark Rosenberger the veteran Jim Thorpe coach said after watching his team post a second straight win to open the season, and move to 2-0 in the Anthracite Football League. The stable of Olympian running backs begins with Bob Heller. He had a terrific early start with 110 yards in the first quarter before finishing with 137 yards on only 12 touches. Heller bagged all three of his teams' first quarter touchdowns with a 1-yard run, then a 22-yard dash and a 29-yard scoot. The third score couldn't have come at a more opportune time. Shenandoah Valley had closed a 13-0 deficit to 13-6 which seemed to elevate the underdog Devils with new life. Before the half closed, the Devils were knocking at the door after recovering a fumble at the 22. But Thorpe's defense stepped up and foiled the scoring threat at the one yard line."The way our line blocks it makes it easy, I just need to follow them, they do a great job of getting me to the (edge)," Heller said praising his lineman. "I really thought that (quarterback) Dean (Richards) did some nice things with the way he ran. Shenandoah was adjusting and Dean quickly picked that up."Richards had only two carries, but one was a scintillating 64-yard sprint right into the heart of the Blue Devils' defense to start the second half and just about took the air out of Shenandoah. After that strike, Jim Thorpe scored three straight touchdowns to build an insurmountable lead. Jordan McElmoyle hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Richards, Kevin Vitti bolted 40 yards to paydirt, and Tylor Day got into the parade when he pranced 21 yards for a 45-6 lead.Adding the coup de grace for the Olympians were two straight kick returns by freshman Jarrin Geisinger. His first was an 85-yard run, and the second from 75 yards out."I will tell you something, that is a much improved Shenandoah Valley football team," Rosenberger said. "They're going to win a few ball games, and they're going to give some teams fits before it's all over."For now, Jim Thorpe is headed in the right direction, just where it wants to be.QUOTABLES ... "The strength of our football team is running the ball, we have a couple of good running backs," said Jim Thorpe coach Rosenberger. Heller the leader and not far behind was sophomore Justin St. Hill with 71 yards on four carries.ZIG-ZAGGING ... Running the counter trey is tough to defend, especially if you get to the edge with the big hogs leading the way. It also sets up a delay draw and that's what Richards ran for his 64-yard score. Shenandoah Valley bit on the outside run, and Richards just breezed right up the middle.LOST ON DEFENSE ... Heller surely was the star running the ball, but he picked off a pass early the second half to set the tables for a Thorpe's fifth touchdown of the game.QUICK STRIKES - Olympians wasted very little time in scoring three first-quarter touchdowns. They ran four plays to hit the end zone to open the game, needed only four more plays in their second offensive series and two plays to score a third time in the first 12 minutes of the game.
