Schuylkill County cleanup and recycling event is planned

Do you have old cellphones, keyboards or televisions taking up space? Here's your chance to get rid of them.

Schuylkill County commissioners on Wednesday approved Vintage Tech Recyclers Inc. to collect electronic material at the county's annual Fall Clean-up and Recycling, at 13 county sites, from Sept. 14 through Sept. 26.Scrap tires, electronics, appliances, scrap metal, and bulky items can be dropped off at the Tamaqua Transfer Station on Sewage Plant Road, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 21 through Sept. 25, and from 7 a.m. to noon Sept. 26.Vintage Tech will provide the service free of charge. The county will buy the necessary pallets and boxes from Kuusakoski Inc., which owns Vintage Tech.Vintage Tech is under the state Original Equipment Manufacturer program, and therefore unable to charge for the service.The Fall Cleanup and Recycling event for the Tamaqua area starts the week of Sept. 21.Electronics, including television sets, computers, microwaves, stereos, hard drives, printers and keyboards can be dropped off at Tamaqua Transfer at no charge.Tires will be accepted, but only those from automobile, light truck, motorcycles or recreational vehicles, up to 16 inches.The cost is $2 per tire without rims and $3 per tire with rims. There is a limit of 10 tires per load, and no more than two loads per customer.Municipalities will also be charged the per tire fee and are requested to make an appointment with the host collection site for large loads.Appliances that are freon bearing, such as air conditioners, refrigerators, and dehumidifiers, can be dropped off for $10 each.Non-freon bearing and scrap metal, including stoves, washers, dryers, water heaters, bicycles, barbecue grills and metal furniture, can be dropped off at no charge.Bulky items such as mattresses, box springs, rolls of carpet, doors and windows can be dropped off at $10 each.Sofas or overstuffed chairs can be dropped off at $5 per cushion (for example, a love seat would have two cushions and would cost $10).The event is for county residents only.Proof of county residency must be provided.Household hazardous waste such as paints, solvents, cleaners and poisons will not be accepted.For more information on the Fall Cleanup and Recycling, call the county Office of Solid Waste & Resource Management at 570-628-1220.
