Panther Creek's numbers

Panther Creek’s numbers

• Began operation on June 16, 1992.• Created about 50 direct jobs and 150 indirect jobs.• Contributes about $2 million annually to the Nesquehoning and approximately $25 million annually to Carbon and surrounding communities.• Obtains culm from a 65-mile radius from Nesquehoning.• Uses approximately 650,000 tons of coal refuse annually as fuel. Of that amount, 300,000 to 400,000 comes from Carbon and Schuylkill.• Through 2014, Panther Creek has used almost 15 million tons of culm as fuel, used almost 9 million tons of beneficial use ash, removed and treated 3.8 billion gallons of acid mine drainage for use at the facility; and remediated and reclaimed over 250 acres of impacted mine lands.• If cogeneration plants weren’t using culm, it would cost Pennsylvania $16.1 billion to address the abandoned mine land problem; and $2 billion or greater would be needed to address the coal refuse piles.
