Carbon man gets state prison in assault incident

A Carbon County man was sentenced to a state prison term on Tuesday after previously pleading to simple assault.

Charles James Holton, 34, of Palmerton, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve one to two years in a state prison.He was arrested on Sept. 29, 2014, at 569 Mauch Chunk St. by Palmerton police. Police responded to a report of a domestic incident involving a female and Holton. Holton was charged with assaulting Lesher Smith, who attempted to intervene in the dispute, police said.Nanovic also ordered Holton to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, have no contact with Smith, and pay court costs of about $1,000.He will begin the jail term at 5 p.m. on Sept. 11.
