Aggressive Indians top Raiders

TJ O'Connor wants his Lehighton volleyball team to be very aggressive each time it steps up to the service line.

The Indians truly lived off the success of their serving capabilities Monday night, which more than helped them score a complete three-game Schuylkill League sweep 25-21, 25-16, 25-12 of Tamaqua."You live by it, and you die by it," O'Connor said. "The first game of the night we only had a negative one ace to two error ratio and that's not what we're looking to have. We're looking to be around two ace to one error ratio. The second game we were four to one. The third game we were also four to one."So, in that situation, our serving was obviously better over the last two games."The Blue Raiders forced 12 ties and 13 leads changes. The Indians had no problem getting the best of the host's defensive when they brushed aside the butterflies. After scoring six aces in the first game, the Indians went on to record seven in each of the last two.Andrea Schafer paced the Indians with eight of the 20 aces, in which she finished the final game with three straight to end the Blue Raiders' misery. Teammates Katie Higgins (six), Autumn Frey (four), Haley Steigerwalt (one) and Lyssa Pantella (one) played their part in splitting the Blue Raiders' defense in an instance."It's very important to be aggressive on the serve," said Higgins, who finished with 13 service points, seven kills and 12 digs on the night. "We have been stressing that all summer long to go out and attack with the serving. I think it really helps because it messes up the other team's defense and they cannot make attacks back."On the other hand, the Indians' serve was more than a complete nightmare for Tamaqua coach Emelie Baker."They had some good servers over there," Baker said. "We work at practice on serve receive and tonight our serve receive was just not on. After that first game, we just kind of fell apart on our serve receive completely."Honestly, I think that's what really hurt us. Once we got the ball, we could get it up in the air, but it was just tough to defend against their serve."FAMILIAR FACES ... O'Connor had coached his assistant coach Lex Jones, while he served as head coach at Blue Mountain High School years ago, and also Tamaqua assistant coach Christa Mantz in Club Ball during their high school careers.A GLIMPSE OF THE PAST ... Jones, Emilie Baker and O'Connor all participated in the 2008 Schuylkill League semifinal match at Martz Hall. O'Connor and Jones were members of the Blue Eagles, while Baker took to the competitive court for Nativity. Baker's Golden Girls swept O'Connor and Jones' Blue Eagles in three games to advance to the league final.TWICE AS NICE ... Excluding Sunday and Labor Day, the Indians and Blue Raiders have faced each other pretty much twice in two days. The Indians scored a 25-9, 25-13 victory over the Blue Raiders in the Cardinal Clash Tournament at Pine Grove. While the Indians ended up making it to the finals to face Nativity, the Golden Girls had the Indians' number to score a 25-15 victory to stake claim to the tournament title.PRAISE FOR THE OPPOSING COACHES ... O'Connor spoke highly about opposing first-year Blue Raiders' coach Emelie Baker and her assistant Christa Mantz, "It's great to get a league in the Schuylkill League at any point, especially in Tamaqua. They're a young team. Two great, young coaches here. They're really trying to change the culture here and doing a nice job and it showed. They played really hard with us tonight. Tamaqua's going to have a great season."

Katie Higgins (10) of Lehighton gets set to spike the ball back over the net as teammate Alyssa Jordan (6) hopes to block a return by Tamaqua's Carly Kosciolek. BOB FORD/TIMES NEWS
