LAUREL RUN, Pa. (AP) - Authorities in northeastern Pennsylvania say a teenage girl was taken into custody after allegedly stealing an ambulance, striking a vehicle on an interstate and eventually crashing more than nine miles away.
Police in Luzerne County said the ambulance was running and unattended in Nanticoke when the 17-year-old girl hopped in and took off just before 4 p.m. Friday.
Police said she struck another vehicle on Interstate 81, then hill in Laurel Run just outside Wilkes-Barre that is the scene of the annual Giants Despair Hillclimb car race.
About 100 yards up the hill, after the ambulance struck a pursuing vehicle, police stopped it using what they called "a precision interception technique."
Police said the teenager surrendered without incident. The ambulance company later called the vehicle a total loss.
