Covered bridge to be closed for work beginning Tuesday

The covered bridge in Lower Towamensing Township will be closed for one to three weeks beginning Tuesday as workers install steel barriers to prevent the 155-year-old span from continued damage from vehicles.

Structural Metal Fabricators of Palmerton will install a U-shaped steel beam before the entrances to the bridge, which is 15 feet wide and 73 feet long, and spans the Aquashicola Creek.Last month, the Carbon County Commissioners hired Structural Metal Fabricators at a cost of $13,637 for the project. At the time Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard said that this will help stop motorists driving vehicles that exceed the height limit from entering the bridge and doing more damage to it.There have been two or three incidents this year regarding vehicles smacking the "headache bars" that were installed as a precaution.
