Two brothers head to court on kidnapping charges

Robbery and kidnapping charges for two Jim Thorpe brothers were bound over to Carbon County court following a brief preliminary hearing Wednesday.

Ernesto L. Gonzalez, 24, and Jermaine M. Gonzalez, 22, are accused of forcing a Franklin Township woman into their vehicle at gunpoint and demanding money from her on Aug. 20.Over 10 family members and friends showed up to Magisterial District Judge William Kissner's office in Palmerton to support the brothers on Wednesday. Many of them said they would be willing to testify at trial that neither brother was at the scene when the female said the crime took place. The victim arrived around an hour late for the scheduled 11 a.m. hearing and did not testify on her own behalf.Carbon County Assistant District Attorney Joseph Perilli called only Franklin Township police officer Frank Buonaiuto to the stand. Buonaiuto said everything he wrote in an affidavit of probable cause filed Aug. 21 is how the incident was described to him by the female.Ernesto pulled up in front of the female's residence, in the 100 block of Main Street, while she was outside smoking a cigarette just after 11 p.m., according to the affidavit.Jermaine exited the back seat of the white Jeep, held a gun to the female's neck and told her to get in the vehicle."(Jermaine) grabbed her by the clothing and forced her into the vehicle," according to the affidavit. After driving off from the scene, Ernesto demanded the female pay him $160 for drugs.Jermaine dumped out her purse and stole a prescription for Zofran. The female said she was able to push her back against the car door and kick Jermaine."As the vehicle proceeded toward McCall bridge on Route 209 near Bank Street, (Jermaine) reached over, unlocked the passenger door and forced the female out of the vehicle, sending her tumbling on the road," Buonaiuto wrote. The female said she was nearly struck by another vehicle before she was able to call her stepfather to come get her.Ernesto was represented Wednesday by attorney William Watkins of Stroudsburg.Court-appointed attorney Adam Weaver defended Jermaine.Kissner reduced both men's bail from $75,000 to $10,000, 10 percent."Ernesto is employed as a chef," Watkins said. "Given the preliminary investigation and that the chances of him being successful in this matter are very high, we felt bail should be reduced."Both brothers also face charges of false imprisonment, simple assault, reckless endangerment, coercing or threatening someone to commit a crime, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and harassment.Ernesto faces a separate charge of driving without a license.Formal arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 13 at 8:30 a.m.
