Georgia man flown from Polk Township crash

Gregory W. Ledford, 42, of Talking Rock, Georgia, sustained major injuries to his right leg in a three-vehicle crash at 2:44 p.m. Aug. 15 on Route 209 in Polk Township, according to state police at Lehighton.

Police said he was transported by helicopter to the St. Luke's Hospital-Bethlehem.One other person, Frank J. Passalacqua, 79, of Jim Thorpe, was injured in the crash.Police said he sustained a minor laceration to his left eye and was treated at the scene by members of the West End EMS and released.The collision occurred at the Route 209 intersection with Horseshoe Drive.Passalacqua was driving a 1998 Plymouth Voyager southbound when the operator failed to stop behind a vehicle stopped in the right-hand lane traveling south.Police said the van crossed the solid yellow line and entered the northbound lane.At the time, a 2007 Saturn Vue, driven by Bobby J. Mathurin, 25, of Lansford, was traveling behind the van, while Ledford was riding a 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle northbound.Police said the cycle struck the van as it entered the northbound lane and then struck the Saturn, which was stopped in the southbound lane. The van came to rest on the median, facing south. The Saturn remained at the initial point of impact. The motorcycle came to rest in the northbound lane.Police said all three vehicles sustained heavy damages and were towed from the scene.Passalacqua was cited in the incident.
