Jury clears Tamaqua man in shooting

A Schuylkill County jury on Tuesday found a Tamaqua man not guilty of aggravated assault in the April 12, 2014, shooting of another man.

John E. Clause, 60, had initially been charged with attempted criminal homicide, aggravated and simple assault and reckless endangerment.The attempted homicide charge was dropped.According to court documents, Clause went to the Walker Township home of Mark Scheitrum, 27, of 114 Reynolds Road, at 7:50 p.m. that day.The two argued, and Clause went into the house to find Scheitrum in the bathroom.They continued to argue, and Scheitrum struck Clause. Clause pulled a handgun from a holster he was wearing and shot Scheitrum in the face.Scheitrum fled, and was found by a neighbor who called for help.He was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Salisbury Township.Clause left Scheitrum's house and went home, where he called Scheitrum's father to tell him he had shot his son.Clause the next morning admitted to state troopers that he had gone to Scheitrum's home, the two argued and the gun went off as they fought.
