A large oil spill was discovered at the new Panther Valley Middle School now being constructed.

Sources close to the scene said a cement contractor accidentally drilled into a fuel oil line and oil, estimated in the thousands of gallons, is seeping downhill towards the school's track and baseball fields.Carbon County Emergency Management Coordinator Mark Nalesnik estimated at least 6,000 gallons of oil seeped out. Eric M. Rooney, a PA Department of Environmental Protection spokesperson in Wilkes-Barre, said booms, pads and a vacuum truck will be used for the cleanup before the new school is scheduled to be opened on Monday, Sept. 4.
