West End Fair opens with talent showcase

Before the first edition the "West End Fair's Got Talent" contest, organizers weren't sure that it was going to be a success. But the fair's entertainment director, Pam Borger, says they were quickly convinced.

"We were on pins and needles the first year, but then it was packed. We couldn't get over it. We knew we're going to continue, as long as we continued getting a lot of submissions," Borger said this weekend. In just three years, fairgoers have embraced the talent showcase, making it a tradition on par with more established attractions like demolition derbies and tractor pulls. The third annual West End Fair's Got talent will kick off the fair on opening night Sunday. This year, 15 finalists will take the stage. They were chosen from a field of more than 30 who all submitted videos of their talent to the contest's organizers. While many of the acts are singers, there is a wide range of talent on the bill for Sunday's show - including dancers and even a hula hoop routine. The winner gets to come back Saturday night to open for country group North of Mason Dixon on the fair's main stage. That is a big prize, but some finalists said the opportunity to perform Sunday night's show is a reward in itself."It would be great if we won, but it's really about the exposure and experience," said Victoria Garcia, who is performing a vocal duet with her sister Gina.As with the first two years of the talent competition, some well-known local personalities will be judging the acts. This year, the panel consists of Randy and R.J. Cramer from the Cramer Brothers Band, Elisa Chase from the Pocono 96.7 morning show, and state Rep. Jack Rader, R-Monroe.Radio personality Gary in the Morning will be emceeing the contest.
