Stroudsburg man, 87, driving on train tracks struck and killed

EMERSON, N.J. (AP) - An 87-year-old Pennsylvania man driving on New Jersey Transit railroad tracks was killed when his car was struck by a train Thursday, officials said.

Vaclav Budak, of Stroudsburg was killed in the accident just west of the Lincoln Boulevard crossing in Emerson, NJ Transit spokeswoman Jennifer Nelson said.

Authorities are still investigating how the Thursday morning accident occurred.

Nelson said the preliminary investigation shows Budak got on the tracks at the First Street crossing and drove along them.

The train had left Spring Valley, New York, at 5:10 a.m. when it hit the car, which burst into flames.

The train was not severely damaged in the incident but did sustain $5,000 worth of damage, Nelson said.

Service on the Pascack Valley Line resumed by 9:15 a.m. after it was suspended in both directions during the initial investigation. Buses honored NJ Transit rail passes.
