New home for Jim Thorpe police discussed

Jim Thorpe borough police may eventually have a new home.

Councilman John McGuire said Thursday night that the current facility the department shares with borough staff, at 101 E. 10th St., is too cramped.A possible solution, he said, is to move the police to the basement of Jim Thorpe Memorial Hall, a facility the borough owns.In addition to added space, the facility is more secure, McGuire said."The police would be in a block building rather than a stick building," he said.Mayor Michael Sofranko supported further discussion on the proposal."Anytime we can make things safer for the police, I'm in favor of that," he said.Council addressed rumors they were selling Memorial Hall in June. The top floor is used as a banquet hall and is the current site of Jim Thorpe's monthly council meetings."It is not listed for sale," solicitor Jim Nanovic said. "Sure, it could be sold at some point. I've been the solicitor since 1999 and I think we talked about it over the past 15 or 16 years. There is nothing new going on here."Jim McHugh, Memorial Hall manager, said Thursday that a water leak from the air-conditioning unit in the building was repaired and that events are being booked into 2017."We just booked our first wedding for 2017 and we have four or five opportunities where we are waiting for people to get back to us," he said.A skating rink is located in the basement of the building."There are a lot of things we would have to do down there before it would be ready for the police," McGuire said. "I think there is a mold situation we have to address."Council said if relocation talks progress, they may consult an architect who has experience designing police stations to draw up plans. If the police move to the building, however, the borough may use the office the department vacates to house council meetings."We would have better acoustics," McGuire said. "Memorial Hall is such a big room that it can be hard for the audience to hear. A more confined space with better acoustics could solve that issue."It's not the first time the move has been discussed. Before the new borough building was opened in 2009, the police were located in rented space in the 400 block of North Street."We talked about moving the police to Memorial Hall back then," Councilwoman Joanne Klitsch said. "It's time to stop talking and do something."The borough plans to look into grant funding before deciding whether to move forward with the plans.
