Man faces DUI charges

Coaldale police have charged a Tamaqua man with driving under the influence.

Jonathan L. Stefanick, 29, also faces a charge of failing to stay in his lane of traffic.According to a criminal complaint filed by patrolman Charles Blesse, at about 2 a.m. June 27 he was driving his cruiser east on Route 209 when he saw a black Mitsubishi sedan traveling east near Bull Run Street. He was behind the car, and saw it swerve within the lane, and then cross the double yellow lines.He stopped the car near the Panther Valley football stadium, and asked the driver for his license and registration. He noticed a strong odor of alcohol. glassy, bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.Blesse asked Stefanick if he had been drinking. A passenger in the car said Stefanick was his designated driver. Blesse asked Stefanick, who told him he had "had a few."Stefanick failed field sobriety tests, and Blesse arrested him on suspicion of DUI.Stefanick asked Blesse several times why he couldn't just let him go home. A blood test indicated a blood-alcohol level of 0.186 percent, more than double the 0.08 percent threshold for impaired driving.
