Prisoner recaptured after escape from constable's van

SINKING SPRINGS, Pa. (AP) - Authorities say a prisoner who escaped from a constable's van after an eastern Pennsylvania court hearing was recaptured less than an hour later.

Police in Lower Heidelberg Township said 38-year-old James Ciaramitaro was being taken back to Berks County Prison when he kicked out a back window and fled into a wooded area.

State police searched the Blue Marsh Lake area with the aid of dogs, a helicopter and a boat before finding him hiding in a tree.

Ciaramitaro had waived a preliminary hearing on burglary, theft and criminal mischief charges in the August 2014 theft of more than $2,000 worth of jewelry from an Alsace Township home.

Police said he had been arrested in Michigan as a fugitive and was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
