Drowning reported at Hickory Run

A 15-year-old boy is reported to have drowned at the Camp Shehaqua/Camp Daddy Allen pool in Hickory Run State Park earlier today.

According to Park Manager Dave Madl, rangers from the park responded immediately to the call and were aided by Albrightsville Volunteer Fire Company QRS (Quick Response Unit) and Lake Harmony Ambulance.

Lake Harmony transported the youth to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center. Unofficially the word is that the young man did not survive.

According to Madl the camps were built in the 1930's under the Civil Conservation Corps and were to be used exclusively by non-profit organizations. The camps are still used in this manner. The pool is located at the crossroads between the two camps and is for the use of the campers.

"The park does not provide life guards," said Madl. "However the group must provide valid life guard certification to the Park office before they are given the keys to the pool."

Madl was present when the young man was being worked on by the emergency personal.

"All we could do at that point was say a prayer and hope for a good outcome," said Madl.

Madl would not confirm which camp the young man was staying at.
