Mahoning man charged with burglary

Mahoning Township police reported the arrest of a township resident on drug charges.

Police said at 4:12 p.m. Aug. 3 a burglary was reported at 149 Boyko Drive.

The homeowner had left for a few hours and returned to find a basement window broken.

Items taken included a handgun, jewelry, money, safe, and a laptop computer.

The next day police met with probation officers at 44 Boyko Drive, where the office was monitoring resident Zachiry Kerschner.

During a search of his bedroom probation officers found a syringe, and a wax packet commonly used in the packaging of heroin.

Kerschner was also found in possession of clonazepam pills. Kerschner was interviewed at the time and he denied any knowledge of the burglary.

Police obtained a warrant to search 44 Boyko Drive for any additional controlled substances, and drug paraphernalia. During the search police found additional needles, various styles of wax packets, and a jewelry box belonging to 149 Boyko Drive.

Police stopped the search and obtained an additional search warrant for items stolen from 149 Boyko Drive. As a result of the search police found the handgun, safe, some jewelry, coins, and foreign currency that had been stolen from 149 Boyko Drive.

Additional jewelry was later recovered from Lehighton Gold & Coin. A search of their records showed Kerschner had sold them four bracelets, one necklace, and one ring, receiving $160 for the items.

Police subsequently re-interviewed Kerschner on Aug. 5, 2015 and he admitted committing the burglary.

He was charged with burglary, criminal trespass and two counts of Theft by Unlawful Taking.

Kerschner was arraigned Tuesday and he remains in Carbon County Prison.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 19.
