Man charged with stolen car

Coaldale police have charged a borough man with receiving stolen property.

Demetrius Simpkins, 34, was charged Friday by patrolman Joseph A. David.According to a criminal complaint filed with District Judge Stephen J. Bayer of Tamaqua, at 9:39 p.m. Thursday David was approached by a man at the police station asking him to check on a Lexus parked on the 100 block of East Early Avenue. The man said the car had been parked there for several days and had no license plate.David found the car, parked at 111 E. Early Ave. He ran the vehicle identification number and learned the car had been reported as stolen from New York City.David spoke with the residents of 111 E. Early Ave., Stacey Simpkins and Demetrius L. Simpkins. Stacey Simpkins told David that Demetrius had gotten the car from their cousin, Antwan Ellison of Jamaica, New York.David spoke with Demetrius Simpkins, who said he had gotten the car from Ellison and he had just surrendered the plates to the New York Department of Motor Vehicles. He said he was going to get the car registered in Pennsylvania.Neither was able to provide any bills of sale, the car's title, or any other proof showing it had been sold or transferred.
