Prize for potato chip contest? $1 million
Who should be the winner of the potato flavor contest - New York Reuben, Biscuits and Gravy, Truffle Fries or Gyro?
That's the million-dollar question that Lay's Potato Chips is asking.
Potato chip fanatics from across the country submitted their entries earlier this year for the Lay's Do Us a Flavor contest. They had to provide the name of the flavor and a story that inspired their submission.
The contest is now down to the four finalists. Their flavors were picked based on originality, creativity and taste. They are: New York Reuben from Jeff Solensky of DuBois, Clearfield County; Southern Biscuits and Gravy from Hailey Green of Noblesville, Ind.; West Coast Truffle Fries from Angie Fu of Irvine, Calif.; and Greektown Gyro from James Wagner of Wichita Falls, Texas.
The three runner-up finalists will each win $50,000 while the grand champion will pocket a million bucks or 1 percent of his or her flavor's net sales through July 15, 2016, whichever is greater.
Fans can vote for the winner through Oct. 18 on
www.DoUsAFlavor.com; or on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtags #VoteReuben, #VoteBiscuits, #VoteTruffleFries or #VoteGyro; or by texting "VoteTruffleFries," "VoteBiscuits," "VoteReuben" or "VoteGyro" to 24477.Mr. Solensky, who works at Station 101 Pub and Kitchen in DuBois, grew up on Long Island, N.Y., and so he decided to go with a flavor that took him back to his roots."The Reuben is my favorite sandwich, and it reminds of growing up in New York and stopping by the delis there," he said. When he took the first bite of his creation, he was surprised with how the flavor replicated a traditional Reuben built with rye bread, corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing. "It tasted just like a Reuben," he said.Mr. Solensky has tasted the entries from the other three competitors, and said he has a 1-in-4 chance of walking away with the prize money."I've never had truffle fries before. But I really liked the Sausage and Gravy. I could taste the tzatziki and the spices in the Gryo," he said. "I am really excited for all of us."Mr. Solensky said it's hard for him to think ahead, but if he were to win the prize money he would like to take his sister, who has been "so supportive and generous," on a holiday to Australia or Italy."I would also like to tuck some money away for a rainy day," he added.Lay's launched the potato chip flavor contest in 2012 and it returned for the second year in 2014. The previous winners are Cheesy Garlic Bread and Kettle Cooked Wasabi Ginger. The PG staff taste-tested the finalists' flavors, and here are some of their reactions.New York Reuben"It tastes like a Reuben. I can taste the corned beef and I can taste the rye.""Love it - sign me up.""Tastes flavorful, but the Reuben is not a flavor I would expect from a potato chip. Therefore it's odd.""Meat and chips don't work together. It's apocalyptic."Goes best with: Dr Pepper or Heineken.Southern Biscuits and Gravy"It does taste like biscuits and gravy. Perfect.""It doesn't taste like much. Not a fan.""It's definitely a snack version of biscuits and gravy."Goes best with: glass of milk or Pepsi or Coors Light.West Coast Truffle Fries"I like it the best. I would not have been able to place the flavor if I had not seen the picture on the bag.""It tastes more like sour cream and onion-flavored chips, and so it lacks originality.""It's the mildest. It tastes like what it is supposed to taste like."Goes best with: club soda with lime or Corona.Greektown Gyro"I won't have guessed gyro, but it tastes good and different from what you find in the potato chip market.""It tastes like a crackling gyro.""The first bite of it tastes like gyro, and then it veers off to fake food land."Goes best with: raspberry iced tea or Straub.
