Hot Busch chasing spot in Chase
LONG POND Kyle Busch is coming and fast.
The Joe Gibbs Racing Driver has been the class of the field in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series over the past few weeks, stringing together three consecutive wins, and four victories in the last five races. To put that in perspective, Jimmie Johnson is the only other driver during the Chase Era (since 2004) to log three or more consecutive wins. Johnson strung together four straight victories in the 2007 Chase on his way to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship and won three consecutive races in the 2004 Chase. Busch is the first driver in to win three consecutive races during the regular season. What's even more impressive is the fact that Busch has done all of this after missing the first 11 races of the season after sustaining leg and foot injuries following a crash during the season-opening NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Daytona International Speedway in February.Heading into this Sunday's Microsoft Windows 10 400 at Pocono Raceway, there's no question Busch and his No. 18 M&M's Toyota Camry will be the team to beat."I'd say we're certainly doing the right things and our momentum is certainly high at this point," Busch said before Friday morning's first practice session. "The guys have just done a phenomenal job both at the shop everyone there at Joe Gibbs Racing as well as here at the race tracks that we've been to."I can't say enough about Adam Stevens (crew chief) and everybody on this team. They continue to fight and each week it seems like everything continues to get better for us."All of that success must surely make Busch a favorite or at least a contender for the championship, right? Not necessarily.Despite the fact that Busch and Johnson lead the NSCS with four victories apiece this season, "Rowdy" enters this weekend's race at the Tricky Triangle 23 points behind Justin Allgaier for 30th in the standings the position that would make him eligible for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Busch has six races left before the Chase starts to get into the top 30 and will need to average 19.6 points in the final six events of the regular season to make the Chase he can achieve that by finishing 24th or better in the remaining regular season events. While it certainly isn't an ideal position for the Las Vegas, Nevada, native to be in, Busch doesn't spend time worrying about what could have been had he stayed healthy."I don't know where we'd be if I wasn't hurt," he said. "Obviously, I feel like we'd be in the Chase but I don't know whether or not we'd have four wins like we do or if we'd have none. I don't know."The point of all of it is that with the injury and everything that I've gone through and my family and my team has gone through this year I think that we've all just kind of grown a little bit more together and I think all of those things have certainly helped."It also doesn't hurt that Busch grabbed the pole during yesterday's qualifying session with a lap of 50.444 (178.416), a run that can only spell trouble for the other 42 drivers in the field come Sunday."I certainly hope so, no doubt," Busch said when asked if he thought he had a shot to earn his fourth straight win this weekend. "I never won at Pocono Raceway and I hope that's about to change."We've certainly had some good runs over the years sometimes in the spring race and sometimes in the summer race but overall I feel like our team has really come a long ways and I like where we're going and where we're at and so I can just hope that we can continue here this weekend and get ourselves a win and make it four in a row."Busch will also be competing in today's NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race, making his first start of the 2015 season in the No. 51 Dollar General Toyota hoping to give Kyle Busch Motorsports its first-ever victory at the Tricky Triangle. He was third in NCWTS final practice.
