4-H'ers show projects during annual event

Carbon County 4-H Club's goal is to help children and teens, ages 8 through 18, develop strong leadership, cooking and other skills that are necessary in everyday life.

It is also a way for them to express themselves, find their interests and grow as individuals. On Monday evening, members of the clothing and textiles, basketry, outdoor cooking, rabbits, shooting sports, gardening, scrapbooking and photography clubs gathered at St. John's Lutheran Church, located on Mahoning Drive West in Lehighton, to show off the final projects they are entering in the Carbon County Fair, which begins Monday.Georgia Farrow, 4-H program assistant, said the Mahoning Valley 4-H Round-up and Family Night is done annually before the fair."This is a time for the families get to come and see the projects," she said, noting that the county 4-H round-up takes place at the Carbon County Fair. "This is something the leaders like to do to review the projects to make sure everything is complete. It's basically a trial run before the fair."The projects are then taken to the fair and rejudged. Some of these projects will also continue on to the Pennsylvania State Farm Show, held annually in Harrisburg.Farrow said 4-H is beneficial for young people because of the variety of clubs that are available, as well as the skills they learn and the experiences they have the opportunity to encounter.During the event, 13 girls participated in a fashion show, showing off the article of clothing or other item they made in the clothing and textile club. Other projects were on display in the church. Each of the projects were judged by outside sources picked by the club leaders using a certain criteria and given either a first, second or third place ribbon. All projects received a ribbon based on the judge's score.
