Council working on snow ordinance

Summit Hill Borough Council held a special meeting Wednesay to hear public comment about amending the town's current snow removal ordinance.

The ordinance, amended in 2014, requires vehicles to be removed from the odd side, or south and east side of borough streets by 8 a.m. following a snowfall accumulation of 3 inches or more. The following day, the even side or north and west side of the street must have all vehicles removed. This will allow for curb-to-curb snow removal. With four council members attending and five residents, there were comments at possible contracting additional help with snow removal, changing the amount of accumulation needed to enact the ordinance, appointing a single person and place to account for the 3-inch total, or removing the ordinance totally.Council Vice President John O'Gurek said, "The goal of tonight's meeting was to get input from the citizens about the snow ordinance."There was much discussion about working different hours for the borough's maintainence department, reflecting on how the snowplowing was handled in years past, or just simply plowing the snow until the roadways are clear.Council member William O'Gurek said, "I don't think we need a five-page ordinance to tell us how to plow snow."All members and residents agreed the ordinance needs to be amended. No official action was taken, and John O'Gurek said, "We will hold another public meeting to work on this ordinance in the future."After about 40 minutes, the meeting was adjourned.
