Summer concerts

The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce continues its free Summer Concert Series this Thursday with a concert by the BC Combo (blues). Concerts are held from 6-8 p.m. on select Thursdays on the platform at the Tamaqua Train Station throughout the summer season, as sponsorship permits.Other scheduled concerts include: Aug. 6, Fraser Thomas (acoustic jazz, blues and pop); Aug. 13, Amanda and Me; Aug. 20, Steve Brosky and Jimmy Myers (acoustic blues); Sept. 3, Diaspora (classic rock).Sponsorships are still available. The currently scheduled concerts have been made possible through the generosity of sponsors such as Momma C's Bakery, Law Offices of Bowe, Lisella and Bowe, Cal's Tire & Auto, 2015 Schuylkill County Republican Candidates, Lehigh Carbon Community College, St. Luke's Hospital-Miners Campus, Air Products and Mauch Chunk Trust.For more information, contact the chamber at 570-668-1880, email

www.tamaqua.net.Senior citizensThe Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met July 16 at the Tamaqua YMCA, 1201 E. Broad St. The meeting was attended by 64 members and one guest, Harry Finhower.President Melody Weicker conducted the business session, and Jacque Patrick provided the inspirational reading, "Shut in Blessings."Pat Brown and Doris Nelson were welcomed back to the group. Refreshments included desserts brought for sharing.The annual picnic will be held Aug. 13 at the West Penn Rod and Gun Club.The group meets at 1 p.m. every Thursday. The next meeting will be July 23.Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The YMCA is handicap accessible.Bethany ECThe Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Sunday school will meet at 9:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, the global outreach commission will meet at 10:30 a.m. and the care and connection, Christian education, operations and local outreach commissions will all meet at 11:45 a.m.Activities for next week include: Monday through Friday, Five Day Club will meet from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the South Ward Playground; Tuesday, prayer time at 8:30 a.m.; Wednesday, sew much more growth group meets at 10 a.m., Tamaqua Youth Ministry meets at 6:30 p.m.Calvary EvangelicalAll services and activities for Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley will be held at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle, 614 Valley Road, through Labor Day.The Rev. Ronald Pickett of Jim Thorpe will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday. Sunday school classes will be held at 9:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, a time of praise, worship and Bible study will be held at 6:30 p.m.An hour of praise and prayer is held at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.The "Dixie Echoes," a Southern Gospel group will present a concert at 7 p.m. July 25 at the tabernacle. The group is from Pensacola, Florida.
