Boy killed, 5 hurt in turnpike crash

A 3-year-old boy was killed in a one-vehicle crash on the northeast extension of the turnpike in Carbon County last night.

Two adults and three other children in the SUV were injured.State police at Pocono said the crash occurred about 8:15 p.m. in the northbound lanes in East Penn Township, north of the Lehigh Tunnel.Troopers said Lashiera M. Johnson, 25, of Chester, was driving a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer in the right lane when she lost control of the vehicle. The Mountaineer drifted onto the east shoulder and then swerved back across both northbound lanes.The vehicle then swerved back to the right, causing it to overturn and roll several times in the northbound lanes.Three of the passengers were ejected as the vehicle rolled. The Mountaineer came to rest on the east shoulder against the guide rail facing south.The other passengers were identified as Sharekka G. Johnson, 24, and three children, two boys ages 1 and 4, and a 2-year-old girl. All were from Chester.All were taken by medical helicopters to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.Troopers said the two adults sustained moderate injuries as did the 2- and 4-year-olds. The 1-year-old had major injuries.The 3-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene. Carbon County Coroner Bruce Nalesnik said an autopsy was scheduled for today.The investigation into the crash is continuing.Both northbound lanes were closed from the time of the crash until about 1:30 a.m. today.Traffic was detoured off the turnpike at the Lehigh Valley and Mahoning interchanges.
