Fundraising begins for Halloween parade

Fourth of July fireworks may have just cleared the sky but that isn't stopping the Northern Lehigh Events Committee from starting preparations on the 108th Slatington Halloween Parade.

Fundraisers are being planned this summer. The first event will be "A Day In The Park" in Victory Park of Slatington, slated for 11 a.m. Aug. 15. The event will host bands, food venders and recently was approved to be a

B.Y.O.B. during the event. The parade started in 1907 in an effort to curb mischief and mayhem on Halloween. A local group dressed like Native Americans and marched down Main Street performing the War Dance. Children soon followed the group and the mischief ended, giving way to a new tradition, the Slatington Halloween Parade.Over the years, bands and floats from surrounding areas and the Lehigh Valley were added. The undertaking for such an event is not easy, good bands are not cheap and quality floats require dedicated time.Volunteers and donations are desperately needed. Since the NL Events Committee is a 501c3 organization, all donations are tax deductible. To volunteer or donate funds, contact Russell Hallman, chairman of NL Halloween Parade at the Northern Lehigh Events Committee at 230 Main St., Slatington.
