Charges pending in high-speed chase in Nesquehoning

Charges are pending against a suspect who led Nesquehoning police on a high-speed chase through town Thursday night.

Borough police Chief Sean Smith said they are not releasing the name of the suspect until formal charges are filed.The incident started at the intersection of routes 209 and 54. Officer Tim Wuttke observed a red Yamaha R6 street bike without a license plate and thought that it possibly was stolen. He activated lights and sirens, as well as the on-board camera to conduct a traffic stop of the vehicle.The driver of the bike then sped up, heading down Route 209 (Catawissa Street) at approximately 70 mph. He turned left onto School Street, then left onto Mermon Avenue, and another left onto Willow Lane and Allen Street before making a right turn back onto Route 209, heading toward the Route 54 intersection.The chase continued on Route 54 with speeds in excess of 90 mph before turning onto Park Avenue in the Hauto Valley Estates. The pursuit continued up Seventh Avenue.The suspect dumped his bike and hid in the woods near Lake Hauto. Nesquehoning and Rush Township police conducted a search of the area, but were unable to locate the suspect.Smith said a lead came this morning that broke the case open. The suspect's parents reported that their car had been taken by the suspect without their permission.Smith located the vehicle on the 300 block of East Catawissa Street and was able to make contact with the suspect.The motorcycle was seized at the scene.Charges are pending against the suspect for both the high-speed chase and use of a vehicle without permission.
